As a fan of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, I can’t believe it took me this long to read American Gods. I found this off-the-wall, thrilling, thought-provoking, magical book impossible to put down! Doing other things was so hard..when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. I just wanted the world to fuck right off so I could enjoy this epic ride. But, at the same time, I didn’t want the ride to end…
A few sparkly gems from American Gods (like 0.000000000000000002 %):
“If you move and act in the material world, then the material world acts on you. Pain hurts, just as greed intoxicates and lust burns.”
“I got to tell you, you don’t look too bright. I got a son, stupid as a man who bought his stupid at a two-for-one sale, and you remind me of him.”
“In a world where people die every day, I think the important thing to remember is that for each moment of sorrow we get when people leave this world there’s a corresponding moment of joy when a new baby comes into this world. That first wail is-well, it’s magic, isn’t it? Perhaps it’s a hard thing to say, but joy and sorrow are like milk and cookies.”
“Tell him that language is a virus and that religion is an operating system and that prayers are just so much fucking spam.”
“Tonight, as you eat, reflect if you can: there are children starving in the world, starving in numbers larger than the mind can easily hold, up in the big numbers where an error of a million here, a million there, can be forgiven. It may be uncomfortable for you to reflect upon this or it may not, but still, you will eat.”
“I can believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe and Elvis and Mister Ed. Listen, I believe that people are perfectable, that knowledge is infinite, that the world is run by secret banking cartels and is visited by aliens on a regular basis, nice ones that look like wrinkled lemurs and bad ones who mutilate cattle and want our water and our women.”
I might end up quoting the whole book if I don’t stop now! If you’re a fan of mythology, history, fantasy, adventure and sci-fi, I highly recommend the masterpiece that is Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.
If you have read it, what did you think?!
