Sun in Cancer + Summer Solstice; June 20th, 2016 ☀♋

“This is the time of the rose, blossom and thorn, fragrance and blood. Now on this longest day, light triumphs, and yet begins the decline into the dark. The Sun King embraces the Queen of Summer..” Starhawk, The Spiral Dance

The Summer Solstice ushers in the high point of light of this solar year on June 2o, at 6:34 pm ET. The Midsummer beams are at their brightest today, the longest day of the year, and like a sunflower, the Northern Hemisphere has its face toward the life-giving Sun.

Summer Solstice is a day for recognizing and honoring the Sun for its energy gifts of bringing light and warmth to our planet. 2016 is a special year, because the solstice coincides with a Full Moon, a time when solar light is radiant and the feminine energies are in abundance.

The summer solstice also coincides with the Sun‘s ingress into Cancer, and the official start of the Summer season; the time of Sun play, ripening of fruit, and honey. Herbs gathered at this time (such as baked elder flower blossoms) were believed to be able to heal and bring health.

Fire and Water are celebrated at the summer solstice, along with the Earth as Mother Goddess, at her most fruitful. Many couples still marry in June, at the peak of nature’s abundance. Some traditions offer newlyweds honey-laced foods for the entire first month of marriage. Not surprisingly, the June full Moon is the Honey Moon.

“Whether it’s an equinox or solstice, we’re celebrating the start of something new. Each season has a specific and essential job that we rely on for our very existence. The equinox and solstice points are sacred markers in time that help us connect the dots to the mystery behind the Earth’s never ending circle of life.” – Maria DeSimone

While the Sun transits gentle and sentimental Cancer from June 21 – July 22, we enter the Realm of Feeling, and are being nudged to get in touch with our emotions. Under the security-conscious Cancer vibe, we rely more on emotions than logic, our actions and attitudes are colored by caution, intuition, and instinct.

Cancer is the sign of the nurturer, they will find a way to nurture something, whether it’s pets, plants, or children. They crave a sense of belonging; they need to feel needed. You just know you’re in good hands with a Cancer friend/parent/love.

We’re more susceptible to the ups and downs of the Moon now. Cancers have a moody, changeable nature, which make them an enigma, even to those closest to them. Like Cancer‘s ruler, the Moon, they are similarly known to glow fully and brightly one moment, and hide their faces the next.

During this transit we might experience mood swings, from dark lows to blissful highs and we’re just as sensitive to the moods and feelings of others (the Crabs are psychic sponges like fellow Water Signs (Scorpio and Pisces.) This could cause us to absorb the positive vibes of optimistics, or be misery’s company. We’ll also need plenty of space and time alone to unravel the little dramas of the day, or we might get a bit cranky..err crabby.

This Solar influence turns to our attention to our nests–anything that makes us feel at home, to be enclosed (like the safe shell of the crab), private, in familiar places. Preparing home-cooked meals, cozying up in bed while watching a great movie (maybe even being tucked in!), a nice long bath..are a few things that make me feel safe, warm, comforted.

Happy Solar Return, Cancers! ♥ (Today’s my birthday / Solar Return! I’m off to celebrate ! (✿◠‿◠)
